About this product

Model:  skywatcher-eq6r-pro-20855
Part Number:  20855

Latest model with USB port.

The new EQ6-R Pro Synscan builds upon the legendary EQ6 Pro mount with a slew of new features that will appeal to astro-imagers!

Includes Sky-Watcher's computerised Synscan™ GOTO handset which enables you to point your telescope to 42,000+ night sky objects, or tour the skies at the touch of a button.

The EQ6-R has a higher payload, is belt driven (reduces backlash and improves guiding) has a redesigned body with a carry handle (easier to transport and setup) and improved latitude adjustment (more sturdy and effective over a wider range of latitudes).  It uses an RJ45 plug for the handset connection (better than the DSUB used by the EQ6, especially in the dark!) and a screw-on power connector (more secure and reliable than the NEQ6 PRO's push-fit power connector). It also features a USB port and a new 'SNAP' camera control port so you can fire a DSLR camera automatically from the mount.

  • Increased Payload capacity of 20kg for Astro-Photography (manufacturer's spec')
  • Synchronous Belt Driven for reduced backlash, smoother operation and better results when guiding.
  • Higher Torque.
  • Improved Latitude adjustment controls with greater range of latitudes possible.
  • SNAP camera control port.
  • USB port.
  • PPEC worm gear and worm periodic error correction function (avoids having to constantly re-train).
  • Build-in carrying handle for convenient transportation and setup.
  • Dual-fit 45mm (Vixen-style) or 75mm (Losmandy-style) dovetail saddle.

Excellent mount but still not perfect
Sunday, 4 August 2019  |

I thought I'd wait until I've had the mount for a year before reviewing it. (Fast delivery is more of a review of FLO than the mount - and they are, of course, always excellent

It's been used just about every clear night since I got it a year ago (which isn't often enough in Scotland!). It replaces my old trusty EQ6 Pro which lasted 10 years (until I broke it!) so I'm comparing it to that. I keep it permanently mounted on a solid pier so any flexure does not come from the mount. It is very solidly built and I have no reason to believe it won't be as reliable as the older one it replaces. I don't really use the handset as I use EQMOD from my PC, but that all works as well as before without issue.

In summary, the good:

- new power and hand control connectors are much more secure and a very worthwhile upgrade
- altitude and azimuth bolts also much better
- quieter, smoother operation because of the belt drive
- on good nights I can get 0.4" RMS guiding using PHD2 and a piggyback mounted C80ED and ASI290MC guide camera. Rarely worse than 0.8" RMS. Pretty impressive for a mount in this price range and much better than the seeing here needs.
- load capacity is great. I use a 10" f4.8 Newtonian, CCD and filter wheel, with a piggyback telescope and it copes well with that. Probably close to 18kg. Requires 4 weights to balance (I don't use the extension bar - 3 weights would do it but I always bang into it in the dark!)
- polar scope cover attachment removes risk of damaging the plastic thread (which the old one did)
- dual saddle is much better

Could be better:

- My biggest issue is backlash! It is better than the old one but there's still quite a bit - too much I believe, in both RA and Dec. No matter how I try and adjust it out using the tiny screws, I cannot improve it significantly without causing the gears to bind. When doing plate solving I have to allow the scope to settle for 10 seconds before solving. It can take that long for the drive to catch up. Balancing obviously improves it and where it's pointing in the sky can make a difference, but I think there's still too much.

- dual saddle could be better constructed. Holds the dovetail fine but it looks a bit messy and doesn't align well. I upgraded my old EQ6 with an ADM dual saddle and this doesn't come anywhere close to the quality of that. It works though.

That said, for the price it's a fantastic, solid mount. The negative doesn't stop it being a great buy and I definitely recommend it.

Thank you FLO, super fast delivery, beautiful mount that will replace my NEQ5 goto. See you soon and good sky.

Excellent mount
Wednesday, 20 March 2019  |

Really pleased with this mount. I had been thinking about going crazy and getting an Avalon to take my imaging to the next level but, given the average seeing in North West Britain, and based on the advice of the helpful FLO people, wondered whether the EQ6 R might be good enough. It is. Out of the box I am getting 0.7 arc second RMS tracking using pHD2 which is some improvement over my HEQ5 which is good (about 1.0 arc second RMS) but a little unreliable. The extra weight capacity of the EQ6 R is also handy and an improvement over the HEQ5. Dead simple to set up and the improved alt az adjustment knobs are great for refining polar alignment - I'm not now constantly worried that the knobs will seize up or break. It is a (reassuringly) weighty beast but it has a carry handle and I leave mine out with one of the excellent telegizmos covers on anyway.

Excellent mount

My much beloved HEQ5 pro mount went and died on me (or so I thought) so my wife told me to buy another mount so that she didn't have to listen to me moan until it got fixed. I didn't need telling twice. I did fancy something with a bit more payload so after a bit of research I plumped for this one. I'm glad I did. It is a lot more substantial than my HEQ5 pro and it works like a dream. I did have a problem with it on my first night when trying to polar align due to a mixture of clouds and a very inaccurate latitude dial. It's 8 degrees out. This is why I've given it 4 stars instead of 5 (It should really be 4 and a half out of 5) However once I got it working I was very impressed. It's solid and well thought out. You get the feeling that an earthquake couldn't spoil an image. Highly recommended.

A Loooooooong Step Up
Tuesday, 27 November 2018  |

I only had to wait a couple of days for the EQ6-R to arrive and though I will have to wait many fold days to the next clear night, I have had the chance to try out the mount indoors and I can only relate to others that "I Love it" After 10 years struggling with an EQ5 Synscan upgrade I truly believe that simplicity and beauty now awaits me each starlit night ahead.

Great upgrade from EQ6 / NEQ6
Saturday, 18 March 2017  |

Living in the United States I was hesitant in ordering overseas. Seeing that the new Skywatcher EQ6-R Pro is not available here in the US, and since I wanted a newer version of the EQ-6 I decided to order from FLO.

Let me say that the ordering process to the States could not have been easier. From the time I ordered on a Wednesday, it was delivered on the following Tuesday. Excellent service!

The mount itself is awesome and I honestly believe it is a worthy upgrade of the EQ6 and the NEQ6. Tracking, guiding, and the overall ability to do astrophotography is amazing.

I could not be more happier with this purchase and highly recommend this mount to anyone looking for a quality mount for Astro imaging!
