About this product

Model:  wo_zs61_gd
Part Number:  A-Z61GD

New updated model with patented Bahtinov Mask cap.

The William Optics Zenithstar 61 APO features an air-spaced doublet lens with fully multi-coated optics and an Ohara FPL-53 ED glass element for sharp, high contrast images virtually free of false-colour.

Provides high resolution images when used for astrophotography or wildlife photography and is a convenient ultra-portable telescope for visual astronomy (think binocular astronomy targets).

The fast f/5.9 focal ratio and compact size make it ideal for convenient wide field astrophotography or piggybacking.

Convenient rotatable L mounting bracket for easy framing of target.

CNC machined aluminium for a superior fit and finish.

Dual speed 2" 1:10 R&P focuser.

Available in Blue, Red or Gold anodised.

Ohara FPL-53 vs FPL-51 ED Glass

The dispersion properties of ED and SD glass elements are important in determining the overall colour correction. The abbe index is used to quantify the 'partial dispersion' of a particular glass. Pure Fluorite offers the highest partial dispersion at around 94.99 V, Ohara FPL-53 glass is very close to Fluorite at 94.93 V and is often referred to as Synthetic Fluorite.  FPL-53 is also noticeably better than Ohara's lower spec' FPL-51 glass which offers an abbe index of 81.54 V.

Excellent travelscope for both visual and photography
Thursday, 11 July 2019  |

I bought this two years ago as a traveller scope, and I am super happy with it. Great build quality, excellent optics. For photography, I also got the flattener, and I use it with the Star Adventurer mini, with counterweight. Unbeatable as a light-weight traveller setup. On this I get good 1-minute exposures, and I have been able to do a number of deep sky pictures with this one, and excellent moon shots. I have also used it for time lapse photography. I really like it for wide field deep sky photography, and with a speed booster I can get it even wider (and faster). For visuals, I've used it for moon and Saturn mainly. Very happy - my only regret is that I got it when it was all new, before they started inluding the Bahtinov mask in the lid - that would be very useful.

Compact Wide field Scope

William Optics Zenithstar 61 APO is a compact, sharp and quality wide field scope. It's very well made, and I've had no issues so far with it. I've used it for terrestrial viewing/images and for some Astrophotography. I took some Moon shots, and when the clouds cleared for an hour I even got quality Andromeda Galaxy images. The included bahtinov mask is another plus, within a minute my stars where pin sharp. Awesome scope, well recommend.

Ultimate backpack scope?

Beautifully made, excellent optics if a bit small, good focuser. OTA + 2" diagonal+ 30mm LV eyepiece still weighs less than 2.5 kg. Best match I've seen for the Star Adventurer mount. A better AP scope than visual (with the flattener)

Professional telescope

Lovely light and small telescope. If you want to travel light and explore the universe this is the best scope money can buy.

For imaging make sure you purchase a the field flattener and if using a dslr the correct t-adaptor size is m48
